Locating Summer Bass

As the summer heat continues to increase the water temperature, Largemouth and Smallmouth bass will move out to deep water or structure, in search of cooler places to rest during the day. Without the ability to sight fish, some people might be lost when it comes to finding where fish are located, making it harder to catch fish. By using the right techniques and having a little more patience, summertime bass fishing can be one of the most rewarding activities on the water.

Bass  want to hang out in places where they can spend the least amount of energy to feed, especially the large ones. They can do this by lurking in the vegetation and striking when prey gets near, or by clinging to hard structures and ambushing. In the underwater video, you can see a prime example of where bass would be.

Can you see the bass hidden amongst the branches? The bass use this camouflage and stealth tactic to feed, without having to burn energy chasing their meals.

Drop offs and points will likely harbor bass because they offer them the ability to move up or down in depth without having to travel a far distance. Fish will retreat to colder, deeper water during the day, and move up to shallow areas at night.

Look at the topographic image and you will see the contour lines inside the red circle become much more compact. This means that there is a steep drop off, and in this particular case, you can see that there is a stream that runs into the lake directly off the point.

With the help of electronics, you can be much more efficient in the process of finding areas that might hold bass. In the summertime, bass tend to school together, and you can often see several fish stacked on top of each other.
